We are working on measurement in Math. We built ramps and raced our cars down them, to measure which cars went the farthest or shortest distance.

We worked on mixed addition and subtraction problem solving using the SMARTboard
for pictures and a dice.

Easter Baskets

We enjoyed filling each others Easter baskets.

Mixed Addition and Subtraction

Today we worked in groups to make up either an addition or subtraction story. Each group had to present their story to the class. The class had to write what the addition or subtraction sentence was on their white boards.

Easter Eggs

We enjoyed decorating Easter eggs. We did 5 different styles. 1. Sponge painting
2. Acrylic Paints 3. Mosaic (with tissue paper) 4. crayon design and dipping 5. dipping with either a sticker face and yarn hair, or sparkles. We loved doing the eggs, and only had a few casualties.

Rock Show

We went to the rock show in Mrs. Ruff's room. The grade 4's were able to tell us many interesting facts about rocks.

Science Fair

We enjoyed going to the Science Fair today. The grade eights had made many interesting discoveries to share with us.

Aboriginal Drummers

Last Friday a group of aboriginal drummers and dancers came to our school and put on a performance for us. They had some very interesting dance steps and costumes, and they told us stories as well. At the end we all got to participate in a "round" dance.

We have been working so hard the last two weeks, doing testing and getting ready for report cards, that we decided to do something fun in art today.

Penny Wars

We have been raising money for Telemiracle by doing a boys vs girls penny war. The girls brought in the most money, giving them the chance to throw pies at our male teachers. Yorkdale raised over 2,000.00 dollars for Telemiracle!

Robert Munsch

Our blog is working again! Just in time for the Wide Open Robert Munsch Puppet show.
We thought the puppet show was GREAT! They did some of our favourite stories, Murmel, Murmel, Murmel, More Pies, Aligator Baby and many more.

Valentine's Day

We had a fun Valentine's Day!! We read Valentine stories, played games, and did a few dances. We enjoyed our friendship lunch with Mrs. Ivanochko's grade ones, and thought the Sask. Express show was fantastic!

SMART Response System

Mrs. Morely joined us today to show us how to use this new system.
Some of us got to answer questions on the computer using a remote. We thought it was a fun way to do a test. We hope to keep using this new technology in our classroom.

Valentine's Art

We worked with our grade 8 buddies to create Valentine folders, to hold our Valentine's in on Friday.

100th Day of School

Today we celebrated 100 days of school. We read 100 Day stories, we made necklaces out of 100 fruitloops, we did a 100 piece puzzle, we stamped 100 stamps in groups of ten, and we made rose colored 100 day glasses. We also had a treasure hunt where we had to find 100 chocolate kisses. But our favorite thing was the bag of 100 munchies that we had to eat as we did all of the activites!

Groundhog Day

We have been learning about groundhogs. We know they can be called whistle pigs, or woodchucks, we know they can run as fast as a grade 4 student, we know they can move 700 pounds of dirt in one day, and we know they make tasty stew!

Sledding Fun

10 Frame Addition

We used our 10 frame cards to play a game with the fact family for 10.
We were amazed at how easily we could add numbers to 10 with out even
counting.

Reading Strategies

Today we practised a new reading strategy called "Blend sounds; Stretch and reread". When we come to a word that we cannot read we can try to take the sounds and blend them together. We take an elastic band and pull the band apart a bit with each sound in the word, stretching out both the band and the word. When we have said each sound and the band is tight we move our hands and the band quickly back together and say the word at the same time, blending the sounds together.

Rhyming

In this reading group we are working on rhyming words. We played a
card game, where we had to find three rhyming words that matched.

Estimating

Today in math we practised estimating quantities. We worked in partners, and went through 6 different station. At each station we would first peek into the bag and estimate how many objects were in the bag. We would record our guess, then we would empty the objects out of the bag to count them and see how close our estimation was.

Painting

We painted dinosaurs today, for the final page of the class book we are writing called 'I Have It'.

Math Pods - adding numbers to 20

We worked on Math pods today in Math. One group worked with Mrs. Trost showing different ways to make 15 with two numbers. One grouped worked on the computer using 10 frames to add numbers up to twenty. One group used the Power of Ten cards to play a game where they had to add two numbers, the person with the biggest number got to take the cards played.

Olympic Athlete

We were very excited to have Lori Ann Mundt, as a guest speaker at our school today. Lori Anne is an Olympic Athlete who was born in Yorkton, and started her volleyball career at Yorkdale school. Lori Anne competed for Canada at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. There she finished in 10th place with the Women's National Team after having won the bronze medal a year earlier at the Pan American Games.

Tasty Experiment

We are talking about our five senses in Science. Today we learned that our sense of
taste doesn't work very well without our sense of smell. We plugged our nose, then put a life saver in our mouth, and tryed to guess what flavour it was. Most of the time we couldn't guess until we unplugged our nose.

Spelling Practice

Shaving Cream

Pattern it

Then we transfered that pattern into a block pattern.

Welcome to blogging in Class 1.2. Our first unit in math is on patterning. We started by working with a partner, to make a pattern with things we found in our classroom. When we were done our pattern we moved to another groups pattern, and tried to see if we could extend their pattern, by repeating what they did.
